CatchLight Global Fellow, Johanna Alarcón, is an award-winning photojournalist based in Ecuador whose visual narratives weave the themes of social justice, environmental defense, human rights and women’s issues. Alarcón’s stunning images have earned recognition from World Press Photo, National Geographic, Magnum Foundation and other prominent institutions, and her work has been published and exhibited worldwide. “The struggle that these women are fighting is a struggle for us all.” Alarcón joined us for an interview to discuss what drives her photographic practice and to share more about her current focus, a project about the indigenous women fighting to protect more than eight million hectares of climate-defining rainforest in Ecuador. “The struggle that these women are fighting is a struggle for us all,” said Alarcón. “I want people to connect with them and understand that life is for everyone.
