ARTE and the Rencontres d’Arles present a screening exploring the life of Czech-born British photographer Lucia Moholy. While her images contributed to the posterity of the Bauhaus, Lucia Moholy had to fight hard to gain recognition for her work. Here’s a closer look at the career of this avant-garde artist.Born into a Jewish family in Prague in 1894, Lucia Moholy moved to Germany at the age of 21. Her meeting with László Moholy-Nagy in 1919 marked a key turning point. Together, they experimented with the possibilities of the photogram. When László Moholy-Nagy became a professor at the Bauhaus, she photographed the school’s achievements, first in Weimar, then in Dessau. In the late 1920s, she moved to Berlin and began a relationship with the Communist MP Theo Neubauer. After his arrest by the Nazis in 1933, she left Germany, leaving her collection of negatives to László Moholy-Nagy, who in turn entrusted them to Walter Gropius before fleeing to America.Coproduced by ZDF / ARTE / SFR / B2W Filmworks, 2024.
