In case you’re not familiar, The Oak Leaf News has been the award-winning student-run news media of Santa Rosa Junior College since 1927. A team of nearly three dozen aspiring journalists cover breaking news, campus events, sports and arts and entertainment stories, write opinion pieces, publish videos and podcasts and produce The Oak Leaf Magazine once a semester. Students also run associated social media sites on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.
Of late, there has been no shortage of breaking news stories affecting SRJC students and faculty.
The Oak Leaf has routinely captured Online General Excellence, Magazine General Excellence and Pacesetter awards at regional and state journalism conferences over the past several years, along with hundreds of individual awards for reporting, photography, podcasting and videography. This week, two students just claimed second place in a national competition for an investigative story they wrote last fall.
Please let your students know about The Oak Leaf and its social media sites so they can stay informed about — and feel more a part of — our community. And if you have any story ideas, please send them to oakleafstaff@gmail.com or to me and I’ll forward them to the student editors.
