  Modulator
February 3, 2026

Modulator is a type family conceived as a dialogue between two designs separated by nearly three decades: Modula Round Black (1995) and Lo-Res Monospaced Solid (2023). The project began when Zuzana Licko explored how the pixel-derived rigidity of Lo-Res Monospaced Solid might behave if softened with rounded edges, an experiment that revealed affinities with the modular structure and narrow counters of Modula Round Black. These shared traits suggested the two could function as endpoints of a single system. Modula Round informed Modulator 100 Medium, while the square proportions of Lo-Res Monospaced Solid became the basis for Modulator 350 Heavy. The numbers refer to the stem weights, which vary, while all styles share the same counter width.Released as a variable font, Modulator allows continuous navigation across its design space for precise fitting and efficient data use. A companion variable font, Modulator Text, is optimized for smaller sizes, expanding the stem and counter dimensions to improve legibility. The family later evolved into Modulator Monospaced, derived from the heavy weight’s square proportions, and ultimately Modulator Mix, which alternates among four monospaced widths within a single font using contextual OpenType features, creating vertically aligned yet rhythmically varied text.
