| Debbie Bentley, a photographer based in Denver, Colorado, is known for her compelling documentation of places and environments, capturing the deep connections between landscapes and the inner experiences of people. Her work emphasizes the significance of recording these relationships. In her 2020 Daylight Books monograph Salton Sea: Beautiful Desolation, Bentley focused on the stark beauty of the Salton Sea in Imperial County, in Southern California. Following this project, she shifted her attention to the Colorado River, embarking on a new multi-year photographic exploration of humanity and our relationship with water. |

| Her latest work, Dammed: Birth to Death of the Colorado River, traces the 1,450-mile course of the Colorado River from its origins in Rocky Mountain National Park to its terminus at the U.S.-Mexico border. The project captures the 16 dams and diversions that punctuate the river’s path, documenting the landscapes, reservoirs, and people whose lives intersect with the river. This environmental photography project aims to raise awareness about the increasing aridity of the Colorado River Basin and inspire dialogue about water supply and conservation. The project culminated in her second monograph, published by Daylight Books in 2024. Bentley is also currently engaged in several new projects, including Bentlandia, which grew out of her previous work on the Salton Sea and Colorado River. Bentlandia playfully documents the quirky, ironic, and sometimes humorous places and objects she has encountered throughout the western and southwestern United States, reflecting the region’s spirit of individuality. We encourage submissions that are not just a historical view but a portrayal of our times seen through individual lives. Metaphors of Recent Times | A Dialogue of the Personal, the Political and the Cultural will feature a multitude of incisive visual perspectives based on diverse identities and backgrounds. The call asks artists to review the INSIGHT/INCITE 20/20 portfolio and submit a trio of 3 images for consideration, relating to each other and to the high level theme(s) of the portfolio. Jurors will select submissions as a trio of images, in dialogue with work from the INSIGHT/INCITE 20/20 portfolio. Submission to this call is free of charge through the generosity of the San Francisco Arts Commission Galleries. |
