SRJC Multicultural Museum, Diaspora In Beads: African and African American Beadwork Traditions in Focus

For Black History Month, the SRJC Multicultural Museum presents a student and volunteer curated exhibit titled Diaspora In Beads: African and African American Beadwork Traditions in Focus.  This exhibit, currently viewable, examines pieces in the Museum’s collections from West Africa, South Africa, and Central African regions and discusses the historical importance of beads and beadwork in various tribes and how those traditions can be tied to contemporary hairstyles outside of the African continent.

Please join us in the Museum on Monday, February 2nd from 12:00 – 2:00 for a casual reception.

Crossing over jordanWe would also like to invite people to view the exhibit cases on the ground floor of Doyle Library, where a local community member, Jane Toy, has volunteered her own time and collections with an exhibit about the Underground Railroad titled Crossing Over Jordan, which will be available through the end of February.

The museum is open from 10:00 – 3:00 Mon-Friday. There is no admission fee, and all are welcome.

I acknowledge that we gather at Santa Rosa Junior College on the territorial traditional land of the Pomo People in Santa Rosa and the Coast Miwok People in Petaluma, past and present, and honor with gratitude the land itself and the people who have stewarded it throughout the generations.
