ZERO WASTE PROGRAMS
CONSTRUCTION & DEMOLITION Working with Permit & Planning departments in Healdsburg, Windsor, Sebastopol, Santa Rosa and County (Permit Sonoma) to transition to Green Halo System for waste management planning and weight tag submittal for permitted projects.CRVRohnert Park CRV Redemption site at Flipside Thrift to be upgraded to hybrid (weigh and pay and automated drop-off) location – expected to open by late June 2024. ZERO WASTE EVENTSThe Zero Waste Symposium 2024 was a huge success, with nearly 200 attendees, over 20 speakers, networking, trivia, a raffle, and happy hour. We can’t wait to see you again next year!Save the Date for Zero Waste Week 2024: October 12-20th The Next Repair & Reuse Fair is scheduled for October 12, 2024 at Rohnert Park-Cotati Library from 1-4pm.
ORGANICS
SHORT-LIVED CLIMATE POLLUTANTS LAW (SB 1383)Compost hubs are now open in Cotati, Santa Rosa, and Healdsburg, with more locations to come! These hubs are stocked with compost year-round, and each location will be open on specific days/hours each month. All residents of Sonoma County are welcome to visit any of the sites. Compost will be loose, bring your own containers and shovels. No heavy equipment allowed. More details on: www.zerowastesonoma.gov/compost-giveawaysThe RCPA-led Carbon Sequestration Through Compost Application pilot project is complete, for which ZWS was a partner. The Board of Supervisors awarded $500,000 through the Climate Resiliency Fund, providing compost to agricultural and community sites. In total, 4881.06 tons of compost was applied, sequestering an estimated 6,197.72 metric tons of CO2 equivalent. This project helped all 10 jurisdictions achieve their 2023 SB 1383 procurement targets. For more information on the project, visit the storymap.
HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE (HHW) 
E-WASTE AND MED COLLECTION EVENTSAt the April 27th DEA Drug Take Back Day event, Sonoma County police stations collected more than 481 pounds of medications, vapes and e-cigarettes. These hazardous materials pose a threat to water quality if not properly disposed of.
SB 1066: THE MARINE FLARE PRODUCER RESPONSIBILITY ACTSB 1066, the Marine Flare Extended Producer Responsibility Act by Senator Blakespear, continues to move through the CA Senate. It has passed out of the Senate Floor and will head to the Assembly next!INDUSTRY LEADERSHIPThe Northern California Gold Rush Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) visited the Central Disposal Site on Friday, May 17th. Zero Waste Sonoma provided a tour of the HHW facility while our partners at Republic Services showed the group around Recycle Town, the transfer station, and the construction & demolition recovery facility. Meetings and tours through organizations like SWANA allow waste professionals to glean best practices from neighboring jurisdictions. SOLAR PANELSZero Waste Sonoma hosted their last scheduled solar panel collection event on Friday, May 10 in Healdsburg. Between the 14 appointments, roughly 150 solar panels were collected for reuse or recycling. More solar panel recycling opportunities may become available depending on funding availability so keep your eye out!
