September is an exciting time as it often marks the beginning of the new season of exhibitions. Photography / Art enthusiasts have much to look forward to this month with a range of exhibitions that span the spectrum from contemporary to historical retrospectives. Here’s a selection of exhibitions that should be on your radar.

Sculpting with LightContemporary Artists and Holography

Southern California’s landmark arts event, PST ART, returns in September 2024, presenting more than 60 exhibitions from organizations across the region exploring the intersections of art and science, both past and present. Holograms produce the magical illusion of three-dimensional objects floating in space. They were made possible by the invention of laser technology in the 1960s, and since then, many artists have experimented with the art form. This exhibition proudly presents holograms by John Baldessari, Louise Bourgeois, Ed Ruscha, and other artists who were invited by the C Project to explore the creative potential of the medium in the 1990s. Deana Lawson turned to holography to expand her photographic practice around 2020. The master technician in both instances was artist Matthew Schreiber, whose work is also featured.

Mona Kuhn: The Schindler House, A Love Affair An exhibition of photography, multimedia projections, and sound installation

The enigmatic subject of Kuhn’s series is an imagined, ethereal figure inspired by a letter from the famed architect R.M. Schindler to a mysterious lover. Shot in the 1920s modernist house designed and built by Schindler on Kings Road in West Hollywood, each portrait is solarized, a technique favored by master surrealists in the 1920s, including Lee Miller and Man Ray. The resulting impressionistic images question the very nature of lyrical fiction and photography as a record, capturing the physical presence of this mysterious woman even as it appears to dematerialize.
A unique exploration of architectural beauty and a mysterious love story within the Schindler House, known for being the first mid-century dwelling built in 1920’s Hollywood. A live performance by composer Boris Salchow and string musicians will take place during a private reception on Sept 14th.

Jean Pierre Laffont: New York Noir

When I arrived as a young Frenchman in 1964, New York City was chaotic, dirty, gritty, loud and dangerous, but it was also attractive, provocative, brave, enchanting, joyous and free. “New York Noir” is inspired by the 1940 Film Noir. It is filled with a sense of danger, it is violent and upbeat, simple and timeless like my New York.
Everything seemed possible and vibrant. I hated it one day and loved it the next. I responded to the city with my heart and never stopped capturing the monumental mess that it is and the exhilaration it provokes.
All my wildest dreams came true in New York, and I hope my photos captured a city that I viewed critically but affectionally and to which I bear an immense gratitude.

Tony Vaccaro: The Pursuit of Beauty

Tony Vaccaro died on December 28, 2022, eight days after celebrating his 100th birthday. Born in Greensburg, Pennsylvania on December 20, 1922, Tony Vaccaro spent the first years of his life in the village of Bonefro, Italy after his family left America under threat from the Mafia. Orphaned at age 6, he was raised by an uncaring aunt and brutalized by his uncle but he immersed himself in studying classic European art and by age 10 had a box camera. He photographed WWII from a soldier’s perspective, documenting his personal witness to the brutality of war. After carrying a camera across battlefields, he become one the most sought-after photographers of his day, eventually working for virtually every major publication: Flair, Look, Life, Venture, Harper’s Bazaar, Town and Country, Quick, Newsweek, and many more. Vaccaro turned the trauma of his youth into a career seeking beauty.
Tony’s transition from war and its aftermath was a deliberate one as an antidote to man’s inhumanity to man. This exhibit explores the extraordinary depth of his archive and features several new discoveries being exhibited for the every first time.

Celebrating the extraordinary talents of women in photography. This exhibition illuminates the diverse and powerful works of some of the most influential female photographers.
Her: The Great Women Photographers features the remarkable works of artists such as Lillian Bassman, Sarah Moon, Ruth Bernhard, Julia Margaret Cameron, Cig Harvey, Bernice Abbott, Judy Dater, Eve Arnold, Doris Ullmann, Martine Franck, Flor Garduno, Judy Glickman Lauder, Lilo Raymond, Ilona Langbroek,Grace Robertson, Anastasia Samoylova, and Sabine Weiss, amongs others.
With each carefully curated work, a testament to the unique vision and artistic prowess of these pioneering women. The exhibition will include a selection of iconic images, as well as some unseen gems.

Roberto Pellegrinuzzi: Trajectoire

Pellegrinuzzi’s Trajectoires series presents a fascinating fusion of photography and drawing, challenging traditional boundaries by incorporating the tactile and sculptural qualities of graphite. The process begins with drawing loops that gradually accumulate on paper through repeated pencil strokes, creating a textured surface where the graphite becomes almost sculptural. The interplay of light with these graphite furrows is meticulously captured by a camera, with the diffraction adding another layer of visual complexity.The digital capture of these drawings amplifies their intricacies. The images are further transformed into sculptures, coated with a graphite patina, thus bringing the drawn line full circle—from two-dimensional surface to three-dimensional object. Pellegrinuzzi’s work not only redefines the parameters of photography but also blurs the lines between different mediums, merging drawing, photography, and sculpture into a cohesive artistic expression.
