AN APPLICATION FOR EXPERIENCING THE PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGE
Les Rencontres de la Photographie, Arles and the Institut pour la photographie des Hauts-de-France are offering a free, playful application, accessible to everyone from age 8 upwards, to introduce children to the reading and practice of photographic images.
The first two chapters were designed by photographers CHARLOTTE ABRAMOW and MATTHIEU GAFSOU, in collaboration with the Orbe collective.
Œil pour Œil mobilizes the potential of digital tools to convey the way these authors think about and construct their images, and to stimulate our creativity in the process.
Guided by the words of the photographers, users discover the photographic universe of each artist before learning how to shoot. Charlotte Abramow guides us in the creation of staged portraits, while Matthieu Gafsou accompanies us in a sensory exploration of the environment to create a sensitive photograph of our surroundings.
This fun, educational tool can be used alone or in groups. It has already been tested in Arles, Lille and Marseille by over 3,000 participants since 2022.

The application comprises two successive phases:
THE PELL-MELL, dedicated to discovering the world of the photographers: when and how were the photographs taken? In what context? What are the intentions behind the images?
Participants can listen at their own pace to the photographers’ story of the production process, and as they go along, identify an image that seems to fit the story.
THE PROTOCOL, devoted to a time of practice, guided by the photographer’s voice. Each protocol is based on audio and written instructions, stimulating observation, creativity, intuition and thought. At the end of the protocol, participants are invited to take pictures.
Matthieu Gafsou’s protocol can be carried out individually, while Charlotte Abramow’s is a duet: a model and a photographer. Matthieu Gafsou invites us to explore the environment in a sensitive, moving way. Charlotte Abramow, for her part, introduces photographic staging through a variation on the Chinese portrait.
The application also includes a glossary of photographic terms, essential for a better understanding of the medium.
