On the occasion of publishing his memoir, This Is Doug Hall, Bay Area artist, trailblazing media pioneer, and influential educator Doug Hall will be in conversation with JD Beltran, director and founder of the Center for Creative Sustainability in San Francisco, covering an era of performances, reenactments, and an impressive career in photography, video, and media installations. This discussion will be accompanied by a book-signing and is presented in conjunction with the Small Press Book Bazaar.
About the Speakers
Doug Hall is an internationally known artist who became recognized in the early 1970s for his innovative work in performance, video, and media installation, both as an individual artist and as a founding member of the T. R. Uthco Collective (1970–78). His work is in numerous public and private collections in the United States and Europe, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art; and the Tate Modern, London. He taught in the New Genres Department at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1979 to 2008; in the Graduate Fine Arts Program at the California College of the Arts from 2008–13; and has lectured extensively at art schools and colleges in the United States and abroad. He lives and works in San Francisco.
JD Beltran is an award-winning artist, filmmaker, designer, and writer. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Walker Art Center; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the de Young Museum; the Getty Institute; the Kitchen in New York; the MIT Media Lab; Cité des Ondes Vidéo et Art Électronique in Montreal; ProArte in St. Petersburg, Russia; and the Fei Contemporary Art Center in Shanghai, China. She is the recipient of some of art and design’s most honored awards, including for the creation of one of the top public artworks in the U.S. (Public Art Network, 2009); creating one of the top design works internationally (German Design Award, 2019, and CES Innovation Award, 2018); and for creating one of the top works blending art and technology worldwide (Top 20 Art & Technology Works Worldwide, New Technology Art Association, 2014). In addition to her visual art, Beltran’s latest creative project is a historical novel in progress that blends her writing with her life experience in the arts: Pay Attention illuminates the lives of working artists from the San Francisco Art Institute as they attempt to launch their careers with skill, genius, or mere provocation.
