The Tate doesn’t usually acquire fashion photography. In 1991, Jason Evans shot a series for i-D called Strictly — portraits of young Black men dressed as country gents. Tweed, tailoring, sportswear. Evans and stylist Simon Foxton were asking who gets to wear them. “The syntax of clothes was completely upside down,” Evans said. “Worn by Black people, it was a new vision of Britain.” In 1991, that was a provocation.
