 Field Notes September 2026, No. 237 Get Started in Photography  Introducing: Get Startedin Photography “I think it’s probably important to learn the rules before we break them, right?” asks Daniel T. Wheeler, photographer, educator, and one of the three mentors of a brand-new online course published by Magnum Photos and MPB.  Now available worldwide and completely free of charge, Get Started in Photographyintroduces the fundamentals of photography — from aperture to editing and beyond — designed for individuals looking to pick up a camera and start shooting.  Alongside Wheeler, founder of Sequence: Nottingham Centre for Photography and Social Engagement, are Magnum photographers Rafał Milach and Cristina de Middel, who invite you to step behind the scenes of their own practice as they share tips on what helped them find their unique vision and voice in the industry. Across nine lessons and over two hours of video content, the three tutors cover camera basics, equipment, genre, composition, practical considerations, editing, storytelling and voice, play, and outputs.  Each lesson is exemplified by photographs from the Magnum archive, including images by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Susan Meiselas, Alex Webb, and others, and several lessons include an accompanying workbook with further guidance, advice from MPB, and a range of exercises to put theory into practice.
