| Dear learners, In 1972, the West German artist Marianne Wex picked up her camera and covertly photographed people in her hometown of Hamburg, observing how men and women were socialized to inhabit space differently. She also rephotographed pictures from advertisements, newspapers, magazines, film, television, and art catalogues, pasting the images onto boards organized into categories like “standing arms,” “sitting legs,” “lying down,” and “possessive holds.” For Wex, “these mostly unconscious actions” were “essential parts of our communication.”Taking Back Our Space: Photographic Perspectives, now on view at MoMA, brings Wex’s feminist project into dialogue with contemporary artists who reappraise the relationship of bodies to public space from Black, queer, and 21st-century feminist perspectives. We invite you to explore these MoMA resources and to consider the resonance of “taking back space” in your environment: Read an excerpt of an interview with Wex from the exhibition’s catalogue. Discover the perspectives of eight contemporary artists featured in the show. Learn why exhibition artist Wendy Red Star would rather be outside. Watch K8 Hardy wander through a thrift shop looking for beautiful things to “ruin.” See Taking Back Our Space during MoMA’s After Hours celebrations of artists and their ideas on October 6 or November 17.
