An-My Lê looks to the stars “The first night that we filmed with An-My Lê in Joshua Tree was quite a unique experience. In order to get the clearest star images, she was photographing during the new moon. This led to an interesting conversation with our cinematographer, since it would be very dark during the shoot and heavy-duty lighting would have interfered with An-My’s long exposures of the night sky.I always try to find creative ways to work within limitations and to embrace the essence of a scene. An-My and her assistant, Alice, were already wearing these red headlamps so they could see their equipment in the dark, so we built on that and created a little ‘night world’ with red lighting. Filming in Joshua Tree at midnight with no one else around, it did really feel like we were in our own little world.”—Sue DingDirector, “An-My Lê: Photographing the Night Sky” |
